The City Palace was built with the city, from 1729, as the seat of Jai Singh II, and the family still lives in part of it: the Chandra Mahal, seven storeys with the flag flying when the Maharaja is in residence. The rest is the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, opened in 1959, which holds the textiles, arms, manuscripts and the two giant silver urns that Madho Singh II took to London in 1902 filled with Ganga water.
The sequence is Mubarak Mahal, the welcome palace of 1900 that holds the textile gallery; the Diwan-i-Khas with the silver urns; the Pritam Niwas Chowk with its four seasons gates — the Peacock Gate is the one photographed; and the Diwan-i-Aam art gallery. The Chandra Mahal can be seen on a separate, costlier ticket.
The palace faces Jantar Mantar across the square and the Govind Dev Ji temple is in the garden behind; the three make a half-day.
