Jaipur is read from the walled city outward. The Pink City of 1727 is the centre and the reason to come; C-Scheme, MI Road and Civil Lines are the colonial and post-1947 ring around it; Bani Park and Raja Park are the old colonies to the north and east; and the new city — Malviya Nagar, Mansarovar, Vaishali Nagar, Jagatpura, Pratap Nagar — spreads south and west towards the airport. Amer is the old capital eleven kilometres north; Sanganer and Bagru are the printing towns on the edge.
The Pink City (Walled City)
The city Jai Singh II laid out in 1727 — nine squares, straight bazaars, and the colour it has worn since 1876.
C-Scheme
The planned colony of the 1920s and 30s where the city’s offices, clubs and better hotels sit, between MI Road and Statue Circle.
MI Road & Panch Batti
Mirza Ismail Road, the first modern shopping street of Jaipur, running from Sanganeri Gate to the railway station side.
Bani Park
The leafy colony north of the station where the heritage guesthouses and family hotels are.
Civil Lines
The colonial administrative quarter west of the walled city — the Residency, the old bungalows and the railway.
Malviya Nagar
The large southern colony where the new Jaipur lives — malls, institutes, apartments and the airport road.
Mansarovar
One of Asia’s largest residential colonies, on the south-west of the city, with its own metro line and markets.
Vaishali Nagar
The western colony of apartment blocks, markets and restaurants along Queens Road and Gandhi Path.
Jhotwara
The industrial and working north-west: the Jhotwara industrial area, the Kalwar road and the city’s small factories.
Sanganer
The block-printing and handmade-paper town on the southern edge, with the airport and the Jain temple.
Bagru
The second block-printing town, 32 km west on the Ajmer road, known for its mud-resist dabu and natural dyes.
Amer
The old capital eleven kilometres north: the fort, the lake, the town below the walls and the road to Jaigarh and Nahargarh.
Jagatpura
The south-eastern suburb of universities, new apartments and the road to the airport.
Tonk Road & Durgapura
The southern artery from the walled city to the airport, lined with hotels, hospitals and the Durgapura market.
Sodala & Ajmer Road
The western gateway: the old Sodala village, the Ajmer Road showrooms and the 200-feet bypass.
Raja Park
The Punjabi colony east of the walls, with the food street the city drives to in the evening.
Vidhyadhar Nagar
The planned northern colony named for the city’s architect, between the Sikar road and Nahargarh ridge.
Sitapura
The industrial and export zone south of the airport: gems, garments, IT parks and the institutes along Tonk Road.
Shastri Nagar & Chandpole side
The old colonies just outside Chandpole Gate — Shastri Nagar, Nahari ka Naka and the Jhotwara road.
Pratap Nagar
The newer southern colony between Sanganer and Jagatpura, with the Jaipur campus of the national law and other institutes.
Jawahar Nagar & Tilak Nagar
The eastern colonies beside Raja Park, under the Jhalana hills.
