Bagru

The second block-printing town, 32 km west on the Ajmer road, known for its mud-resist dabu and natural dyes.

Bagru is a small town on the Ajmer road, west of Jaipur, where the Chhipa community has printed cotton with natural dyes for several hundred years. The Bagru style differs from Sanganer: it uses a mud-resist (dabu) technique and earth colours — black from iron, red from alum and madder, indigo from the vat — on an unbleached cream ground.

The printing is done in the old quarter, in family workshops with the printing tables under tin roofs and the washed cloth laid out to dry on the ground beside the river. Several families have kept the craft through generations and now sell to designers and exporters as well as from their own doors.

A visitor comes for the workshops and buys direct. Bagru is a day trip from Jaipur, often combined with Sanganer; the drive is under an hour.

  • Combine with Sanganer and Chokhi Dhani for a crafts day south and west of the city.
