Sanganer is a town of its own, sixteen kilometres south of the walled city, that Jaipur has grown out to meet. It has been a printing town for at least three centuries: the Chhipa community has block-printed cotton here since the Mughal period, and the fine floral Sanganeri print is recognised as a craft of the town. Handmade paper, made from cotton rag, is the other industry, with mills along the Sanganer river.
The town also holds the Jaipur airport, which takes its name from Sanganer, and the eleventh-century Jain temple of Sanghiji, carved in white marble and one of the older buildings in the district. The old town around the temple has its own bazaar and gates.
A visitor comes to Sanganer for the printing workshops, which can be seen at work in the lanes behind the main road, and for the paper factories that sell direct. The Sitapura industrial area and the EPIP export zone are next door, and the Tonk Road runs through.

Worth knowing
- Printing workshops are open on working days; ask at the shop to see the tables at the back.
- Handmade paper is cheaper at Sanganer than at the emporia; the factories sell in bulk.
- The airport is in Sanganer; hotels in Malviya Nagar and Jagatpura are nearest.
- Bagru, the other printing town, is on the Ajmer road, not here.
