Sanganer has made paper by hand since the seventeenth century, when the Kagzi community settled there under the Mughals. The paper is made from cotton rag — the waste of the textile trade — pulped, lifted on a mould, pressed and dried in the sun; it is strong, textured and acid-free, and the mills also make it from silk waste, jute and flower petals.
The industry grew in the 1990s into an export trade: greeting cards, gift boxes, notebooks, lampshades and wrapping paper go to Europe and America from the Sanganer mills, which also sell direct from their showrooms on the main road.
Where the trade is
| Name | Where | What it is known for |
|---|---|---|
| Sanganer paper mills | Sanganer main road | Showrooms and factory sales. |
| Kagzi Mohalla | Sanganer | The paper-makers’ quarter. |
| Cards, boxes and notebooks | Mills and emporia | The export range, sold retail too. |
| Emporia | MI Road | Handmade paper products in the city. |
Worth knowing
- Ask to see the vats and the drying; the mills show visitors.
- Sheets are sold by the quire; cards by the dozen.
- It is light and travels well.
