Civil Lines

The colonial administrative quarter west of the walled city — the Residency, the old bungalows and the railway.

Civil Lines was the British quarter of Jaipur, laid out west of the walls around the Residency of the political agent and the railway that arrived in 1875. The bungalows were set in compounds along straight roads, and the quarter kept a separate character from the walled city, with its church, its club and its railway officers’ colony.

After 1947 the bungalows passed to the state and the quarter became the official residential area: ministers’ houses, judges’ quarters, the Chief Minister’s residence. It remains the greenest and quietest part of central Jaipur, and the Civil Lines metro station on the pink line put it on the rail map in 2015.

Visitors see it mostly on the way from the station to the walled city. The old Residency buildings, the Railway Colony and the long avenue of Sawai Ram Singh Road are the sights; Ajmer Road at its southern edge carries the city’s traffic west.
