Vaishali Nagar

The western colony of apartment blocks, markets and restaurants along Queens Road and Gandhi Path.

Vaishali Nagar developed in the 1990s on the western side of Jaipur, beyond the Chitrakoot and Khatipura areas, as a colony of private housing and later of apartment towers. It became a self-contained part of the city: its own markets, hospitals, cinema and schools, and a restaurant row on Gandhi Path that the whole city drives to.

Queens Road and Gandhi Path are its two spines. Amrapali Circle is the landmark junction, and the Chitrakoot sector to its east is the older, greener part. The colony is well off and busy, and in the evening the cafes and street-food stalls along Gandhi Path fill up.

For a visitor it is the restaurant and shopping side of the new city; the walled city is a half-hour drive east through Chandpole. Khatipura and Jhotwara, the working-class west, border it on the north.
