Jaigarh stands on the Cheel ka Teela hill above Amer, built by Jai Singh II in 1726 to guard the capital and its treasury. It was a military fort rather than a palace: the cannon foundry, the armoury and the three great water tanks are its character, and the Jaivana cannon, cast here in 1720, is the largest wheeled cannon in the world, fired once in a test.
The fort is connected to Amer by underground passages and by the road from behind the fort; it is quieter than Amer and has the better view of it. The palaces inside — Laxmi Vilas, Lalit Mandir, Vilas Mandir — are plain by comparison, and the museum shows the arms and the old photographs.
