Jawahar Kala Kendra opened in 1993 as the state arts centre, in a building by Charles Correa planned on the same nine-square mandala as the walled city, with one square turned out of alignment as in the original plan. It holds theatres, galleries, a library, a crafts museum and an open-air amphitheatre, and it runs the city’s programme of theatre, music, dance and exhibitions.
The Thursday shilpgram market brings craftspeople from across the state to sell direct, and the cafe in the courtyard is the meeting place of the city’s artists.
