Diwali in Jaipur

The lit bazaars — Johari, Bapu, MI Road and the walled city in lights for a week, and the city’s biggest shopping season.

Diwali in Jaipur is the lighting of the bazaars. For a week the walled-city streets, MI Road and the markets of the new city are lit with strings of lights and the shops compete in displays; the city drives through at night to see them, and Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar are the ones to walk. Dhanteras before Diwali is the jewellery-buying day, and the gold and silver shops stay open late.

The sweets, the diyas and the fireworks are as elsewhere; the lights are what Jaipur does.
