Johari Bazaar

The jewellery street of the walled city, from Badi Chaupar to Sanganeri Gate — kundan, meena, polki and loose stones.

Johari Bazaar is the street Jai Singh’s planners gave to the jewellers in 1727, and it has not changed trade since. It runs south from Badi Chaupar to Sanganeri Gate, and both sides are jewellery: the old family houses with their upstairs workshops, the gem dealers, the silver shops and, in the lanes behind, the karigars who set the stones.

Jaipur is the kundan and meena capital of India. Kundan is the setting of stones in pure gold foil; meenakari is the enamel on the reverse. Polki, the uncut diamond, is set the same way. The craft came with the Mughal court jewellers whom the Kachwaha rulers brought to Amer, and Johari Bazaar is where it is still made and sold. Gopalji ka Rasta and Haldiyon ka Rasta, the lanes off the bazaar, are where the cutting and polishing of coloured stones goes on.

The bazaar also has the lac bangle shops, the sweet house LMB at its northern end, and the Jama Masjid. Buy from an established house, ask for a hallmark on gold, and expect to bargain on the smaller shops.

Worth knowing

  • Ask for BIS hallmarking on gold and a bill with the stone details.
  • The big houses have fixed prices; the lanes bargain.
  • Sundays are mostly closed.
  • The gem-cutting lanes are workshops, not shops; look but ask before entering.
