Jewellery Workshops and Karigars of Jaipur

Where Jaipur’s jewellery is made — the workshop lanes of Johari Bazaar and Gopalji ka Rasta, and the export factories of Sitapura.

Behind the showrooms of Johari Bazaar, a Jaipur jewel passes through many hands. The ghat-wala cuts and polishes the stone; the gadhai-wala shapes the gold frame; the meenakar fires the coloured enamel on its back; the kundansaz presses the pure-gold foil around each stone; and the setter, the polisher and the stringer finish it. Each of these is a separate craft, often a separate family, working in small rooms on the upper floors of the old havelis of Gopalji ka Rasta, Haldiyon ka Rasta and Ghee Walon ka Rasta.

Jaipur is also the world’s largest centre for cutting coloured gemstones — emerald, ruby, sapphire, tanzanite and the semi-precious stones — and much of that cutting is done in homes and small units across the walled city. Many of the goldsmiths at the benches are Bengali karigars who settled here, alongside the old Rajasthani families of the trade.

Export jewellery is made differently, in factories. The Gem & Jewellery Zone of the EPIP and the two Special Economic Zones at Sitapura, on the Tonk road, hold the city’s organised makers and exporters, from gemstone-cutting units to plants making silver and gold jewellery for buyers abroad.

Most makers sell to the trade rather than over the counter; several of the walled-city houses below do both. Each name opens its own page.
