Jaipur is the largest centre for the cutting and polishing of coloured gemstones in the world. The trade came with the court: the Kachwaha rulers brought jewellers from Delhi and Agra to Amer and then to the new city, and Johari Bazaar was planned as their street. Today the city processes emeralds from Zambia and Brazil, rubies and sapphires from Africa and Sri Lanka, and tanzanite, in thousands of small workshops, and exports cut stones and finished jewellery across the world.

The trade has three layers: the family houses of Johari Bazaar and the lanes behind it, where stones are cut and sold; the manufacturers and exporters in Sitapura and the EPIP, who make for international buyers; and the Jaipur Gem Bourse at Sitapura, opened in the 2000s as the trade’s own exchange. The Jaipur Jewellery Show each December is the annual fair.

For a buyer the rule is to deal with an established house, get the stone certified by a recognised laboratory, and remember that Jaipur is a cutting centre — the rough comes from elsewhere.
