The Sweets of Jaipur

Ghewar, feeni, mishri mawa, mawa kachori, besan chakki and the sweet houses that make them.

Jaipur is a city of sweet houses — misthan bhandars — and each season has its sweet. Ghewar for the monsoon and Teej; feeni, the fine-thread sweet, for the winter and Makar Sankranti; mishri mawa and besan chakki all year; mawa kachori as the Jaipur speciality; and the milk sweets, rasgulla and rabri, in every shop. The houses in Johari Bazaar and on MI Road are the old names; every colony has its own.

The sweets are also the gift: a box of ghewar or mawa kachori is what Jaipur sends with a visitor.
