Albert Hall was designed by Samuel Swinton Jacob and opened in 1887 as the Jaipur state museum, named for the Prince of Wales who laid its foundation in 1876 — the same visit for which the city was painted pink. The building is the finest Indo-Saracenic work in Rajasthan, set in the Ram Niwas public garden that Ram Singh II laid out south of New Gate.
The collection is a nineteenth-century museum of everything: the Persian garden carpet of 1632, the Egyptian mummy, miniatures, arms, ivory, pottery, musical instruments and the clay figures showing the crafts and castes of the state. The building is lit at night and the pigeons on its lawn are part of the picture.
