Chokhi Dhani opened in 1989 on the Tonk road south of the city as an ethnic village: a walled compound of mud huts, courtyards and stages where the visitor sees folk dance, puppet shows, a magician, camel and bullock rides, and eats a Rajasthani thali seated on the floor. It is the model that similar resorts across India have copied.
It is an evening programme — the gates open at five and the dinner is the last act — and it is the easiest way to see the folk arts of the state in one place, if not the most authentic. The thali is dal baati churma, gatte, kadhi, bajra roti and the sweets, served without end.
