Nahargarh Fort

The fort on the Aravalli ridge above the city, built in 1734, with the Madhavendra Bhawan and the sunset view over Jaipur.

Nahargarh was built by Jai Singh II in 1734 as the northern defence of the new city, on the ridge that rises directly behind the walled city, and extended by Madho Singh in the 1880s with the Madhavendra Bhawan, a palace of nine identical suites for the queens around a central court. The name is said to come from Nahar Singh Bhomia, a prince whose spirit had to be appeased before the fort could be built; his temple is inside.

The reason to go is the view: the whole of the walled city and the new town spread below, and the sunset from the walls. The road up winds from the Amer side; a footpath climbs from the walled city behind Nahari ka Naka. The fort has a restaurant and a wax museum, and the Nahargarh Biological Park is at its foot on the Amer road.
