Gangaur is the festival of Gauri, Shiva’s consort, celebrated for eighteen days after Holi and ending with a procession of the painted wooden image of the goddess from the City Palace through Tripolia Gate to Talkatora. It is a women’s festival: unmarried girls pray for a good husband and married women for their husbands’ lives, and the clay and wooden images are decorated at home.
The procession, with elephants, horses, camels and the palace band, is the other great street spectacle of Jaipur after Teej.
