Blue pottery is the one Jaipur craft that does not use clay. The body is a paste of quartz, glass, borax and gum, shaped in moulds and fired once at a low temperature; the decoration is cobalt blue and copper-oxide turquoise under a transparent glaze, in floral and animal patterns. The technique came from Persia through Kashmir to the Jaipur court in the nineteenth century, nearly died, and was revived in the 1960s by Kripal Singh Shekhawat, whose family studio still works.
Today the craft is made in workshops in the city and the villages around, and sold in every emporium: tiles, vases, plates, doorknobs, bowls. It chips easily and is decorative rather than for daily use.
Where the trade is

Worth knowing
- Tap it: the quartz body rings; clay imitations do not.
- It is fragile; pack each piece.
- Doorknobs and tiles travel best.
