Lac bangles are made and sold in Maniharon ka Rasta, the lane off Tripolia Bazaar, by the Manihar community whose name means bangle-maker. Lac, the resin of the lac insect, is softened over a charcoal brazier, coloured, rolled into a strip, shaped into a ring on a wooden cone and set with glass stones and beads — all in front of the buyer, to the size of her wrist.
The bangles are a wedding and festival item, worn in sets, and the lane is at its busiest before Teej, Gangaur and the wedding season. The same craftsmen make lac boxes and the lacquered toys sold in Kishanpole.
